Explore the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, aka SFMOMA, is one of the largest museums in the world celebrating modern art. Opened in 1935, it was the first museum in San Francisco, in the state of California and all of West Coast to dedicate itself exclusively to the art of the twentieth century. The museum is managed by SFMOMA, a nonprofit organization that owns and conserves a fascinating collection of contemporary and modern art that is recognized internationally. There are more than thirty-three thousand artworks including sculptures, paintings, designs, architectures, media arts, and photographs.
About San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
SFMOMA has a massive exhibition space spanning 170,000 square-feet or 16,000 square-meters. Both in terms of collections and space, it is one of the largest modern art museums in the world. While it was closed for three years to facilitate an expansion, the museum reopened in May, 2016. The expansion project has allowed the inclusion of the Doris and Donald Fisher Collection. Some of the noteworthy exhibits and collections at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art are Richard Diebenkorn’s Ocean Park #54, Louise Bourgeois’ The Nest, Diego Rivera’s Flower Carrier, Frida Kahlo’s Frieda and Diego Rivera, Robert Rauschenberg’s Collection, Clyfford Still’s 1947-S, Andy Warhol’s A Set of Six Self-Portraits, Bruce Conner’s Three Screen Ray and Edward Hopper’s Intermission.
There is a virtual tour available on the official website of SFMOMA where you can check out the permanent exhibits.
